What is magnetic drill?
A magnetic drill is a specialized power tool used for portable drilling of structural steel on the job site or in the shop. It combines the versatility of a drill press with a strong electromagnetic base enabling it to adhere to a carbon steel (ferrous metal) surface. It can be positioned to drill horizontally, vertically or even upside down.

Magnetic drills can use a wide variety of tooling including annular cutters, twist drills, taps, reamers, and counter sinks. They are extremely versatile machines that can drill a hole up to 130 mm (5-1/8″) diameter and tap 50 mm (2″) diameter in steel. They are comprised of four main components: a magnetic base, a drill stand, a motor, and an arbor (chuck). Magnetic drill common trade names include “mag drill” , “portable drill press” and “core drill”.

Magnetic Drill VS Hand Drill
Magnetic drills were initially designed for construction companies to drill a large quantity of holes in structural steel already in place, such as i-beams. They offer increased stability and are easier to use than a hand held drill and also provide better accuracy and cut large diameter holes faster. A secondary benefit to mag drills is they can drill and tap (thread) holes up to 40 mm (1-5/8″). For example a common application is to drill a 14 mm (9/16″) diameter hole to tap a 16 mm (5/8″) thread without moving the machine.
